For anyone who missed the VP debate last night, go to http://www.npr.org/2012/10/11/162754053/transcript-biden-ryan-vice-presidential-debate for full transcript and audio.
To begin the discussion, I’ll start at the end of the debate. Or rather, near the end. When the moderator asked both candidates ” I want to move on, and I want to return home for these last few questions. This debate is indeed historic. We have two Catholic candidates, first time on a stage such as this, and I would like to ask you both to tell me what role your religion has played in your own personal views on abortion.” Both candidates are Christians of the same faith, yet both have completely conflicting views on abortion. Ryan is anti-abortion, a view that is mirrored by his church. Biden is pro-abortion. Both agree that life begins at conception, but Biden, seemingly in conflict with this statement, said that he refuses “to tell other people that women, they — they can’t control their body.” This statement completely leaves out the fact that the women in question are not only controlling their own body, but the body of a living child. He claimed that he did not want to impose his views on others. He said that no Catholic hospital “has to either refer contraception. None has to pay for contraception. None has to be a vehicle to get contraception in any insurance policy they provide.” This is an outright lie. For just one article covering this mandate, go to http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/01/catholic-church-vs-obama-in-election-year-showdown/. Biden, who claims he doesn’t want to force his beliefs on others, supports an administration that does just that. With a combination of lies, contradictions, and cheesy grins, he tried to make a point that conflicted with everything he’s every done or said.
That’s the John Galt line.
