Apologies

When I was younger, I called myself “John Galt”. I was inspired by the maverick from Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged, and I sought to change the world, to spit in the face of my perceived oppressors.

I’m writing now to apologize for my words.

I once saw a world burning to ashes, drowning in the moral bankruptcy of sexual deviants. Now I see a world beginning to love and care for all of its denizens, regardless of gender or sexuality. I once saw armies of sinister liberals, seeking to impose an anti-Christian agenda on the working people of the United States. Now I see everyday people fighting for the right to worship (or not worship) how they choose, without interference from the state. I once saw rabid armies of social justice warriors, trying to take away my rights as a white man in favor of “reverse racism”. Now I see systemic bias against women and racial minorities, supported by mountains of statistical evidence, just barely beginning to be addressed. I once saw an authoritarian regime of fascists attempting to disarm the people. Now I see sincere attempts to address the horrendous gun violence problem in this nation through simple, balanced measures.

I once saw a conservative movement that stood for fact, freedom, and justice, in the face of liberal elites. Now I see a movement that has become so detached from reality, it doubts the validity of science itself.

If you, the reader, agree with my old writings here, I would ask that you take a good hard look at how you evaluate evidence. What criteria do you use to determine that a source can be believed? Are you being as objective as you think you are? I was once where you are now, and if you’re anything like I was, the answer to that last question is “No”.

And to the world at large, I’m sorry for perpetuating the false narratives and unsupported stories I bought into when I was younger. I’m doing everything I can now to fight back against the very forces I once aligned myself with, and I hope to see you fighting alongside me.

We’ve reached the end of the John Galt Line.
