The purpose of this website is to educate teens and young adults about what’s going on in the world today.

Some people tell us to be afraid of the future. But we won’t be. Knowledge is power, and we aren’t weak.

I’m Abigail Adams, named after President John Adams’ wife, but you can call me Abby. I will do my best to post relevant and informative articles, but if you ever have any suggestions, just e-mail me at abby@notyourparentspolitics.com

Welcome

Hello,

I would like to introduce myself as Prometheus.

I chose to bear this name because of Prometheus’ actions. He was a Titan in greek mythology and is best known for taking fire from the gods and giving it to man. In this I consider fire power and the gods are as the current government.

Like Prometheus I believe in power to the people and small government.

I strive to defend the free market and the constitution  which I believe plays a big part in keeping the government’s power in the people.

“The issue today is the same as it has been throughout all history, whether man shall be allowed to govern himself or be ruled by a small elite.”

Thomas Jefferson

The Name’s Adams. Abby Adams

Hi!

I’m Abby.

I chose this name because I deeply admire Abigail Adams. Wife of President John Adams.

Like her, I want to defend rights, not just for women, but for everyone. I want to crush the stigma that women are weak, and don’t belong in politics. This is who I am , this is what I’ll do.

I love learning about the news, and politics. It is empowering to be informed. We started this website to share what’s going on in the world from a “minor’s” perspective. Stay tuned for more posts!

Oh, and by the way, if you would like to share an idea for a post, just email me @

President Obama’s Recent Change of Heart
As many of you have probably heard, President Obama recently announced that he now supports same-sex marriage. This to me aroused many questions that I would like to share with you.In his interview with ABC News he confirmed that he was in fact Christian. Now even though it is highly unlikely that a member of the Christian faith were to support gay marriage I see nothing wrong with it. But there is another factor that must be put into play and that would be President Obama’s race against Candidate Romney.Could the President only be doing this to distance himself from Mitt Romney and hopefully pick up a few more voters in the process? It is definitely possible. Or has the President truly changed his opinion? And although it is too soon to tell, I wonder if our President will be persecuted for his now “evolved” opinion.

Candidate Romney Was a School Bully
As you all probably know, Candidate Romney is currently the Republican front-runner for this year’s election. Naturally, this means that his every move will be questioned, reviewed, and dissected. But now, even his teenage years are being investigated. After an in-depth study of Candidate Romney’s teen years at a private prep school, it was learned that there was an incident where he bullied another student. He was described as a prankster who didn’t understand boundaries. After the information came out, Candidate Romney apologized for his behavior that may have hurt someone. However, he also said he did not remember the incident as is was described by the  article in The Washington Post.

“Back in high school, I did some dumb things and if anybody was hurt by that or offended, obviously I apologize for that,” Mr. Romney told Brian Kilmeade, a radio host. Mr. Romney added, “I participated in a lot of high jinks and pranks during high school and some might have gone too far and for that, I apologize.”–Candidate Romney

This news is causing many people to wonder how much of any candidate’s background is fair to investigate. Chime into this argument by answering the questions below:

  1. What do you think? Is it fair to investigate the private life of any candidate who is running for president?
  2. Do you think this incident really happened?
  3. How does this affect you as a teen/young adult?
  4. Why do you think this information is just now coming out?

The Unlikely Story of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl; P.O.W.

As of now, there is only one known-of P.O.W. (Prisoner of War)  from the United States. His name is Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, and he has been missing for 3 years. The Obama Administration has been working on finding a way for Sgt. Bergdahl to be released, and the current plan is to trade him for 5 Taliban prisoners who are currently being held in Guantánamo Bay. Sgt. Bergdahl’s father has also reached out to the insurgents, and is in regular contact through email with a man who he believes to be in the Taliban, who has knowledge of his son. Mr. Bergdahl was quoted as saying “You don’t leave something like this to government officials. Why wouldn’t a father do this? This is my job”

What do you think about all of this? Here are a few questions we want you to answer in the comments section below:

  1. What do you think of the proposed 5:1 trade? Good? Bad?
  2. Do you think Mr. Bergdahl was justified in contacting a member of the Taliban?
  3. What would YOU do if you were in Mr. Bergdahl’s situation?

Obama’s Same-Sex Marriage Support: Ethics or Politics?
After President Obama’s shocking declaration that he supported same-sex marriage, many Americans are debating whether it was a choice based on ethics, or politics. In a survey done by The New York Times and CBS News, it shows that 67%  of Americans think that President Obama made the decision because of political reasons, and 34% felt he made the decision because it was what he felt was morally right. But how do individual people feel about the decision? Let’s take a look:Holly Wright: Age 67 Independent from Smithfield, Virginia

Said she believed that Mr. Obama had concluded that more Americans approved of same-sex marriage. “He believes it will help him win the election,” she said. “In other words, say what the majority of the people want to hear.”

Larry Gannon: Age 48

Independent from Norwalk, California

“If Biden hadn’t said something, I don’t think he (President Obama) would have said anything either.”

Although President Obama’s announcement is a big deal right now, relatively few voters actually consider same-sex marriage their top issue. Especially with economic chaos, more than half of a group that was surveyed said this new announcement makes little to no difference in their choice for president. Ironically, most of those who said Obama’s position would influence their vote said they were now less likely to vote for Obama to be re-elected.

So, the question is,

What do you think about Obama’s decision? Motivated by ethics or politics?
